The House

CILYON is a house of leather, founded by designer Cecilie Villadsen. It takes its name and its spirit from Lyon, France's historic capital of silk and fine craft, where the weavers of the Croix-Rousse once turned raw thread into cloth for the courts of Europe.

CILYON turns raw hide into objects meant to outlive their owners: bags, small leather goods, ready-to-wear and pieces for the home, made with quiet precision and finished slowly.

The Craft

Every piece begins with the leather. The house works in full-grain and vegetal-tanned hides, chosen to soften and deepen with time, and each one is cut, assembled and finished with the care of an atelier rather than a factory.

The signature raw-silk saddle stitch, le point Saône, signs every seam. Each piece is blind-stamped CILYON · LYON and lined in fine goatskin.

The Language of the House

Every CILYON object carries a name of its own. Leathers are named for the rivers, hills and quarters of Lyon: Saône, Croix-Rousse, Presqu'île, Fourvière. Colours are drawn from the French vocabulary of chalk, mist, garnet and honey. Models carry the names of the city's great landmarks.

A piece is spoken as a single phrase, a Grège Bellecour in Presqu'île calf, so that it is asked for by name, never by description.

Interiors & Homes

Beyond the collections, the atelier creates furniture, lighting and leather interiors to order, from a single chair to a complete room. Each commission is signed and dated.
